At SEBR, we are proud to have DEFCON8 as one of the leading partners in our international initiative to enhance the energy efficiency of buildings in 3 European countries. DEFCON8 is an environmental company dedicated to helping people reduce water and energy consumption in buildings through real-time monitoring and feedback. By making buildings more sustainable, efficient, and resilient, they enable clients to earn BREEAM and LEED points, improving energy ratings and reducing CO2 emissions. This makes DEFCON8 the perfect partner to coordinate innovative solutions that lower energy use and promote sustainability. DEFCON8 leads an international consortium that wins a €537,000 contract to make existing buildings energy efficient
- The Catalan startup, specialised in water use monitoring and efficiency, will propose improvements to the energy efficiency of three buildings across Europe.
- To win this European tender, DEFCON8 received support from ACCIÓ through the Innovation Public Procurement service.
- DEFCON8 coordinated the creation of a unique platform that brings together about ten energy-saving solutions applicable to any existing installation.
The Catalan startup DEFCON8 is leading an international consortium (SEBR – Smart Energy Building Renovation) that has won a contract worth €537,000 to develop a pilot project aimed at making 3 existing buildings across Europe energy-sustainable. DEFCON8, an expert in water use monitoring and efficiency, is coordinating a unique platform that integrates around ten energy-saving solutions. This consortium will present a pilot project to apply its platform to buildings in Germany, Portugal, and Catalonia.
To win this European procuRE project tender, financed by the European Union, DEFCON8 received support from ACCIÓ—the business competitiveness agency of the Department of Business and Labor—through its Innovation Public Procurement service.
DEFCON8 offers a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform for water use monitoring, providing recommendations to optimize consumption. Their platform is one of the ten energy-saving solutions integrated into the platform created by the international consortium.
According to DEFCON8 co-founder Javier Ray, “the unique platform is a ‘plug and play’ solution that allows anyone looking to renovate a building to select, in one place, the options that best suit their needs and budget, with a single point of contact.” Furthermore, he adds that winning this contract “gives us great visibility and validates our water monitoring solution in the market.”
Specifically, the proposal led by DEFCON8 includes installing photovoltaic panels on the buildings’ roofs, storing the harvested energy in batteries, making the buildings self-sustaining. Additionally, the proposal includes replacing lighting with LED systems, installing water-saving systems, and incorporating smart home technology to reduce overall energy consumption.
The European procuRE project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement Nº 963648, aims to promote energy renovation of buildings as a major driver for achieving the EU’s climate neutrality goals by 2050. Three buildings across Europe have been selected to receive pilot renovation proposals from three international consortia, including SEBR. Should they win the third phase of the tender, the consortium led by the Catalan startup will be able to install their solutions in some of these buildings.
The buildings selected for energy renovation in this pilot phase include two schools located in Nuremberg (Germany), and Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal), and the Town Hall of Sant Boi de Llobregat (Catalonia).
DEFCON8 is a Catalan startup founded in 2016 and based in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Vallès Occidental). It currently has eight employees.
